At MOAR (Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery), we believe advocacy begins with empowerment—especially for those who have been silenced by stigma, shame, or fear. Far too often, individuals struggling with addiction are viewed as “bad” instead of human, leading many to suffer in silence, unsure of where or how to get help. That’s where AREAS comes in.
What Are AREAS Groups?
AREAS stands for Addiction Recovery Education Access Services. These groups are more than just meetings—they are a dynamic, peer-driven network designed to educate, support, and empower people in recovery, no matter where they are on their journey.
AREAS is about breaking down barriers to recovery. It’s about offering a hand to those who feel intimidated or disconnected. And most importantly, it’s about helping people reclaim their voice and their power.
What Makes AREAS Different?
At the heart of AREAS is peer support. These groups are led by people in recovery—for people in recovery. They understand firsthand the challenges, the doubts, and the victories that come with rebuilding your life.
Here are some highlights that make AREAS so special:
- AREAS offers education on recovery topics requested by its members. This ensures content is always relevant, useful, and deeply rooted in the real needs of the community.
-
AREAS groups aren’t just talk—they’re action. Sessions are designed to help people solve real-world problems related to housing, employment, legal issues, and more.
-
People in recovery are not only supported—they’re developed. AREAS provides pathways for participants to grow into leaders who can help others, creating a powerful cycle of recovery and giving back. Many of our AREAS facilitators once started as members of an AREAS group.
Why AREAS Matters
Recovery is all about rebuilding a meaningful life. That’s why AREAS places such a strong emphasis on life skills, access to services, and personal growth.
These groups help individuals:
-
Develop confidence and a sense of purpose
-
Learn to advocate for themselves and others
-
Build strong, supportive relationships within the recovery community
-
Stay connected and reduce the risk of relapse
